Taj: Kerman Is Iran’s Third Football Province

Quoting the Public Relations Office of the Kerman Governorate, Dr. Mohammad Ali Talebi, Governor of Kerman, met with Mehdi Taj, President of FFIRI, on Monday, 15 Dey. Talebi emphasized the high social significance of football, noting its role in channeling youth energy, strengthening social cohesion, and fostering national pride.
He highlighted Kerman’s strong position in Iranian football, both in terms of public interest and the active presence of clubs across various leagues, including men’s and women’s competitions. Referring to the province’s infrastructure, Talebi pointed out that Kerman operates five active airports and has suitable stadium facilities to host national and international matches.
The governor also addressed the importance of hotel infrastructure, stating that significant steps are underway in this area. He announced that a five-star hotel in Sirjan will become operational by the end of the year, while several hotel projects are currently under construction in Kerman city.
Talebi further declared the province’s readiness to host matches involving Esteghlal and Persepolis until Tehran’s Azadi Stadium becomes fully available, stressing that provincial authorities are fully committed to enhancing Kerman’s sporting profile. During the meeting, FFIRI President Mehdi Taj presented the national team jersey to the Governor of Kerman.
With the approval of the FFIRI President and the backing of the provincial government, it was officially decided that Mes Rafsanjan will be granted a place in the Premier Beach Soccer League.
Speaking at the meeting, Mehdi Taj underlined Kerman’s importance in Iranian football, stating: “Kerman is the third football province in Iran, and numerous football events are held here every year.” He added that Kerman also ranks third in terms of the number of teams competing in the Persian Gulf Pro League.
Taj noted Iran’s international football standings, citing the national team’s 20th place in the FIFA rankings, beach soccer’s fourth place globally, and futsal’s sixth place. He also referred to Zahra Jafari being named Asia’s Best Women’s Coach in 2025 as a significant achievement for Iranian football.
Regarding infrastructure, Taj explained that a national stadium development task force has been established in cooperation with the government, resulting in 16 standard stadiums currently operating across the country. While praising Kerman’s stadium facilities, he emphasized the need for further development in the hotel sector to fully unlock the province’s potential for hosting international events.
The FFIRI President also stressed the importance of further developing beach soccer in Kerman.
Finally, Hojat Soltani, Director General of Sports and Youth of Kerman Province, announced that a one-week advanced training course for Premier League referees and assistant referees is currently being held in the province.
