Dehghanian:

Iran’s Commitment to Progress in Grassroots Football

AFC decision to award Iran’s grassroots and amateur football program with Gold-Level Membership.

Iran’s Commitment to Progress in Grassroots Football

Somayeh Dehghanian, Head of Iran’s Grassroots Project, described the achievement as a landmark moment for Iranian football and a powerful sign of continued progress.

“It’s a true honor to speak about such a significant milestone for our country’s football development. For the first time in history, the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran has been granted the Gold Level status in the AFC Grassroots Programme—an achievement that speaks volumes about the work being done at the foundation of the game.”

Dehghanian emphasized that this recognition did not happen by chance.

“Behind this success lies years of unwavering effort at both national and provincial levels—careful assessments, a coordinated four-year strategic plan, structured implementation, and the tireless dedication of those involved in grassroots football across Iran. From committed local coaches in cities and rural communities to our technical staff and provincial officials—everyone has played a role in strengthening the grassroots infrastructure.”

She explained that the Grassroots Project is about building football from the ground up—engaging children, teenagers, and the wider community in inclusive and structured football experiences.

“Achieving Gold status means we have successfully met the AFC’s highest standards in areas such as child engagement, grassroots coaching education, expanded playing opportunities, and systematic football school management. It is a symbol of both recognition and responsibility.”

Dehghanian added that the real future of Iranian football is being shaped not just in stadiums, but in football schools, dusty street pitches, and through the passion of young boys and girls across the nation.

“This Gold Level is more than a badge of honor—it’s a call to continue advancing. We believe the future of football in Iran will rise from within our communities, carried by the dreams and enthusiasm of our youth.”

In closing, she offered heartfelt gratitude to all who made the achievement possible:

“I sincerely thank all officials, colleagues at the national and provincial levels, our hardworking grassroots coaches, dedicated families, and most importantly, the children—who are truly the heartbeat of Iranian grassroots football. This success belongs to all of us.”
