Friendlies Against Top Teams Are the Key to World Cup Success
Young midfielder Mohammad Ghorbani, one of the early foreign-based players to arrive at Iran’s national team training camp ahead of matches against Qatar and North Korea, spoke about his motivation, preparation, and long-term goals.
Early Arrival and Readiness
“Even though the club season has ended, I made sure to join the camp early. From the first day, I’ve trained alongside my teammates and focused fully on preparing for the two important upcoming games,” Ghorbani said.
A Youthful, Positive Camp Atmosphere
“There’s a great atmosphere in the camp. Many young players have been called up, which bodes well for the future of Team Melli. Experienced players are gradually joining too, and we’re building a cohesive, competitive team.”
Building on Club Performance
Reflecting on his form last season, he added:
“I had a strong season at the club level and now I hope to elevate my performance even further in the national team. Coach Ghalenoei always trusts young players—if they perform well, he gives them a chance, whether as starters or substitutes. I’m doing my best to earn his trust.”
Youth Inclusion as a Long-Term Strategy
“Since the AFC Asian Cup, I’ve been called up to every camp. That consistency reflects the coaching staff’s belief in the youth. Bringing in new faces creates healthy competition and keeps the team motivated.”
Crucial Role of Friendlies Before the World Cup
Ghorbani highlighted the importance of high-quality preparation:
“To perform well at the World Cup, we need detailed planning. Playing friendlies against strong teams from Europe or South America is essential. These matches allow us to test ourselves at a higher level and prepare tactically. Such games could be the difference between success and failure.”
Working Under Amir Ghalenoei
On training under Iran’s veteran coach, Ghorbani said:
“Everyone knows about Coach Ghalenoei’s impressive record, both with the national team and in club football. For young players like me, working under him is a major opportunity. I’m determined to repay his confidence through my performance.”
A Homegrown Coach at the World Cup – A National Honor
“It’s a great honor that we’ve qualified for the World Cup with an Iranian coach. It’s a testament to our local football culture. With this technical staff, I believe we can achieve meaningful results on the world stage.”
Message to the Fans
Ghorbani concluded by calling on fans to attend Iran’s final home qualifier:
“Our match against North Korea is the last one at home. The fans’ support gives us a huge boost. I hope we can make them proud with a great win.”
